Logging On Helps People Lose Weight

Logging On Helps People Lose Weight
Posted by ActiGraph on August 3rd, 2010It seems like we’re all searching for that “magic bullet” to help us lose weight but here’s an idea that might really help: Logging on. Yes — to your computer.

Sitting in front of your computer is unquestionably a sedentary activity, and one many of us do way too much.

But researchers at Kaiser Permanente say when patients regularly logged on to an Internet weight loss support group, they increased their chances of staying active and managing their weight.

The small federally-funded study was part of a much larger ongoing evaluation of weight maintenance programs.

Researchers followed 348 overweight or obese individuals who had recently lost an average of 19 pounds during a weight loss program. Their goal, of course, was to maintain that weight loss.

To help them meet that goal, participants were offered an interactive web site created specifically for the study. They were asked to log on once a week, record their weight and how much they exercised, and note whether they kept a food diary, detailing what and how much they ate each day.

They were also offered a chance to participate on an interactive billboard with other study participants and pose questions to nutrition and exercise experts.

After two and a half years, researchers found that the patients who consistently used the web site — those who logged in and recorded their weight at least once a month for 24 months — maintained the greatest weight loss. They kept off an average of nine of the original 19 pounds they’d lost. Those who logged on less consistently kept off only three to five pounds.

At the end of the study, most of the original 348 participants were still logging on to the web site.

Researchers say this level of commitment is encouraging and holds promise for other web based weight maintenance programs. While the study web site is no longer available, researchers say there are a number of other weight management web sites worth checking out.

They suggest consumers look for the following important elements in any online weight loss program:

■Sites that encourage accountability by asking users to consistently record weight, exercise and calories consumed
■Sites that include tailored or personalized information
■Sites with interactive features that allow users to communicate with each other and with nutrition and exercise experts
■Sites with accurate health information
The study is published — where else but online in the Journal of Medical Internet Research

C&L notification – the first step towards CLP compliance

C&L notification – the first step towards CLP compliance
CLP stands for the Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on the Classification, Labeling and Packaging of substances and mixtures. CLP introduces the United Nations globally harmonized system (UN GHS) for classification and labeling of chemicals into Europe. CLP entered into force on 20th January 2009.
According to CLP, EU manufacturers and importers (or groups of manufacturers or importers) who place a hazardous substance on the market, shall notify certain information, in particular the substance identity and the classification and labeling of that substance to ECHA (C&L notification) before 3 Jan 2010.
Non-EU companies and REACH only representatives are not entitled to submit C&L notifications. Our recommendation to EU importers is that they shall submit their own C&L notifications as the first choice. However, non-EU manufacturers shall supply detailed composition information about their product.
If importers wish to avoid C&L notifications, they may request their non-EU suppliers to do the job in which case non-EU companies may submit C&L notifications in the name of the EU importers or appoint one of the importers to notify on behalf of the other importers (notification as a group). Such an importer could also be an Only Representative (OR) if the OR can be considered as an importer (afterNon-EU manufacture supplying him with a sample of the respective substances or mixtures). However, making an OR an importer is not feasible in most instances. Click here for more information about CLP compliance.
Get your goods certified and be prepared for REACH enforcement
OECD has summarized typical REACH offences [pdf]and penalties [pdf] of EU member states. To avoid penalties, EU importers are recommended to get the imported goods certified based on Keller and Heckman LLP’s suggestion.

“There are many practical questions associated with documenting compliance at the point of entry of goods into the Customs territory of the European Union (EU), particularly with respect to valid pre-registrations, whether the substances are exempt or not from registration, whether the pre-registration obligation was taken over by the importer, the only representative of the exporter, or the only representative of the exporter's supplier and whether the quantities imported have exceeded the tonnage band registered.

The U.S. has in place a simple and effective system for ensuring compliance of imported goods. Under Section 13 of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), the importer must certify at the point of entry that the goods either are not subject to TSCA, or are subject to TSCA and in compliance. The certification mechanism serves to ensure that importers carefully review the legal status of the goods they order from overseas suppliers. A similar certification mechanism would be useful if implemented in the EU. Requiring importers to certify will ensure that importers take their responsibilities seriously even if the registration obligation is being carried by the only representative of the foreign supplier. Importer responsibility is fully consistent with Article 5 of REACH and makes a great deal of sense.”

CIRS has adapted its REACH certificate according to HSA’s suggestion [sample,498kB]. The certificate is issued for free as CIRS’s way to record customers sold to and quantities imported. All certificates will be stored in a reliable and secure REACH Compliance User Management System.
Application Form[doc, 37KB]
CIRS’s OR working report published
CIRS presented its first OR working report at the request of Irish Health and Safety Authority (HSA) – the REACH enforcement body in Ireland in July. The full article can be found here [pdf, 580KB]

Since the Dutch Environment Ministry (VROM) EU found out many bogus ORs or mailbox ORs in March, the OR inspection has become an integral part of REACH enforcement. EU importers are advised to double check the credentials of ORs with the non-EEA manufacturers that hired them. If they are found to be illegitimate, then importers will need to request their suppliers to change OR or find another legitimate supplier or prepare to register the substances themselves.

CLP Compliant Label (GHS Labels)

Dear clients,

CLP stands for the Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on the Classification, Labeling and Packaging of substances and mixtures. It came into force in 2007. CLP is another piece of chemical legislation in EU you need to comply.

EU manufacturer, importer, downstream user or distributor shall label any chemical substance or mixture which is classified as hazardous and is contained in packaging. The label should be firmly affixed to one or more surfaces of the packaging containing the substance or mixture. Many EU importers might need to prepare new labels in accordance with CLP regulation and they might also request non-EU chemical companies to provide CLP compliant labels.
CLP introduces the United Nations globally harmonized system (UN GHS) for classification and labeling of chemicals into Europe. Thus CLP label is identical to GHS label in EU and also applies to countries that have applied GHS such as USA.

The attachment shows how to prepare CLP compliant label. I hope it is helpful. Should you need our help, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Note: We also provide REACH & CLP compliant SDS. For more information about CLP regulation, please go to CLP.

best regards,
Rami

REACH & China REACH have you start comply with yet??

Since pre-registration ended in December 2008, manufacturers/importers of phase-in substances (existing substances) shall decide whether to register or not to avoid any possible interruption on business. Non-phase-in substances (new substances) shall be registered immediately before being placed in the EU market. Phase-in substances shall be registered before 2010, 2013, and 2018 respectively depending on the tonnage band and hazard properties of substances.

Time has become very urgent for substances with annual tonnage above 1000t per year.

What is REACH Regulation?

REACH is the EU regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals. It came into force on 1 June 2007. EU manufacturers and importers must comply to register their substances manufactured/imported in quantities over 1 ton per year with European Chemical Agency (ECHA) by 2010,2013 and 2018, depending on the tonnage and hazard properties of the substances. Non-EU manufactures may appoint EU-based Only Representative to register to relieve the registration obligations of their importers.

What is China REACH?

September Updates

On recent Israeli market surveys on semiconductors for 2008 + 1st half of 2009 the news aren't so great, Israel has followed the rest of the world and semiconductors sales plunged by 30-35% .
The market size in 2008 is $735Mil the first half of 2009 the market has continued its slow performance and signs of recovery/stability are showing for the 2nd half of 2009.

It's hard to guess the future of the Indusry, one thing for sure is clear :
while the number of vendors has always continued to grow in Israel since the hype of the 1999-2000 , The local clients and procurement agents has kept decreasing and major OEM's have constantly reduced their production and outsourced their purchasing .
The current local market size is far too small to the large number of sellers,
It's one of the best buyers market in the world ...
Best wishes for a better New Year !

article on REACH enforcement - all EU suppliers are now required to comply

REACH Now a Reality
Written by Administrator
Friday, 05 June 2009
BRUSSELS -- As of June 1, all EU suppliers are now required to comply with a raft of substance restrictions under the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation.

The substance restrictions apply every time an article is supplied (including components, sub-assemblies and finished equipment) and enforcement action can be taken at any point in the supply chain. The substance restrictions also apply to distributors that resell components and sub-assemblies, and retailers that resell finished equipment.

The 53 substance restrictions are detailed in Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation (as amended) and cover a range of applications. In addition to substances already restricted under the RoHS Directive, there are 19 additional REACH substance restrictions that can be relevant to electrical and electronics equipment and hardware.

More substances are expected be added to the list by the European Chemicals Agency and EU Member States. However, the list of REACH restricted substances is expected to develop more slowly than the REACH Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern, which may grow by up to 25 substances per year according to the ECA. Substances on the Candidate List require declaration if the component, sub-assembly or finished equipment contains more than 0.1% w/w of that substance.

REACH enforcement is carried out through Member State regulations and is coordinated across Europe by the ECHA Forum for Exchange for Information on Enforcement. In France, for example, companies that do not comply with REACH restrictions face a maximum prison sentence of two years or a maximum fine of €75,000. In the UK, noncompliant companies face a maximum penalty on conviction on indictment of a fine (unlimited) or imprisonment not exceeding two years, or both.

REACH SVHCs

http://www.elec.co.il/Articles/Item.asp?ArticleID=4592&CategoryID=258

REACH is now in force and is beginning to have a significant impact on the electronics industry. Manufacturers both within and outside the EU will be affected with important deadlines that must be met in 2008 and 2009. Failure to plan ahead could cause serious
disruption to business — enforced design change and loss of sales due to the inability to meet customers REACH requirements are particular risks.
REACH not only affect manufacturers that import the chemicals into EU, but also has obligations for formulators and manufacturers of components, PCBs, sub-assemblies
and equipment both in and outside the EU. REACH is already having an impact as some substances have been withdrawn from the EU market and others are likely to follow.

TPP - NEW USER FRIENDLY FEATURES!

REACH/SVHC and Halogen-free flaggingThis new feature identifies the 15 named Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) under the European Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restriction of Chemicals Reach legislation. Additionally, Halogen-free products will be flagged and tracked for reporting purposes. Users will be able to submit any board-level electronic component through Total Parts Plus' web application and generate the named material, weights and measures required for REACH reporting.

PCN daily text file alertsUsers may now elect to receive a daily text notification on any new PCNs and/or PDNs that are posted. An expansion of the current PCN Alert configuration, the daily text option provides additional preferences for receiving alerts beyond exact matches and alternates. For example, users may elect to include wildcard matches.
New Environmental ReportIn response to the increased request to combine obsolescence data with RoHS compliance information, TPP has added the “RefPN Flag/Process Information” report to the Material Content Analysis dropdown. The new environmental report includes part status, reference PN availability and end-of-life information fields to the RoHS compliance and lead finish data.

Part Alias Technology™A high performance analysis, this tool cleanses and identifies part number matches for unknown parts. A new enhancement to the Parts Plus application eliminates incomplete reporting and analysis due to these unknowns. The user-friendly interface ensures that all AVL/BOM parts are recognized for attributes such as obsolescence status, lifecycle, PCN's, secondary sources, RoHS compliance status and declaration information.
